What Is a Holiday Binder? How I Use Mine to Plan & Budget for the Holidays
What Is a Holiday Binder? A Simple Way to Prepare for Holidays, Birthdays & Celebrations
The holidays can be such a fun and special time of year, but they can also come with a LOT to keep track of.
Gifts to buy. Birthdays. Family celebrations. Holiday meals. Decorations. Events. And, of course, all of those little things we tell ourselves we're going to remember!
But here's something I've learned over the years: holidays and celebrations aren't really unexpected expenses.
We know they're coming.
The problem is that sometimes we forget to plan for them.
Then a birthday pops up, a holiday is suddenly two weeks away, or there's a family celebration we need to shop for. Now we're trying to find extra money in a budget that was already planned for something else.
The budget gets thrown off, we get frustrated, and the cycle begins again.
That's exactly why I love having a Holiday Binder.
So, What Is a Holiday Binder?
My Holiday Binder is a dedicated place to save small amounts of money throughout the year for holidays, birthdays, and family celebrations.
Inside the binder are 12 cash envelopes covering the major holidays, along with an envelope for family celebrations.
The Holiday Binder available in my shop also includes a dashboard and a few additional items to help you organize your system, plus a gift card holder in the back.
The idea is simple: instead of waiting until a holiday or celebration is right around the corner, you can prepare for it little by little throughout the year.
And that's the part I really want you to remember:
This isn't just a binder for the end of the year.
It's something you can use all year long.
Why Save for Holidays Throughout the Year?
Think about how many celebrations happen between January and December.
We have the major holidays, but then we also have birthdays, graduations, Mother's Day, Father's Day, anniversaries, family celebrations, and all of those other special occasions that happen throughout the year.
And birthdays are a BIG one for me!
Like I always tell you guys, I have a ton of birthdays during the summer months. Trust me—having even a little money already set aside helps.
You don't need to put $50 or $100 into an envelope every payday.
Start small.
Maybe it's $5 each payday.
Maybe it's $3.
That's okay.
You're still preparing.
Those small amounts can add up over time, and when that holiday or birthday arrives, you aren't necessarily starting at $0 and trying to figure everything out at once.
It's About Being Intentional With Your Money
One of the biggest things I teach when it comes to budgeting is being intentional.
We're not trying to create the perfect budget.
We're trying to create a budget that works with our real lives.
And holidays, birthdays, and celebrations are part of real life!
If we know they're coming, why not prepare for them?
Even if you don't save enough to cover the entire expense, having something set aside can make a difference.
Maybe you've saved $40 toward a birthday gift.
Maybe you have $75 waiting for Thanksgiving groceries.
Maybe you've been putting a few dollars away for Christmas throughout the year.
That's money you don't have to suddenly find in your regular weekly or monthly budget.
Why I Love Having a Holiday Binder
There are so many reasons I love this system, but these are some of the biggest ones:
1. Your sanity!
Yes, I'm serious!
There is something about knowing you've already prepared—even just a little—that can take some of the pressure off.
Instead of thinking, “Oh my goodness, I forgot I need to buy a birthday gift this weekend,” you can open your binder and see what you've already saved.
2. It helps prevent your budget from getting completely thrown off.
One unplanned expense can sometimes lead to another. We move money from one category, then we're short somewhere else, and suddenly we're frustrated with the entire budget.
Preparing ahead can help break that cycle.
3. Small amounts don't feel as overwhelming.
You don't have to save everything at once.
Saving $3, $5, $10, or whatever fits your budget over time can feel much more manageable than trying to come up with the entire amount right before an event.
4. You can actually see your progress.
This is one of the reasons I love cash envelopes.
There's something motivating about opening your binder and physically seeing the money you've been putting aside.
Little by little, you're getting prepared.
5. It encourages you to think ahead.
Your binder becomes a reminder.
You can look ahead at what's coming over the next few months and decide where you want to put your money instead of waiting until the last minute.
You Don't Have to Fund Every Envelope at Once
This is important.
Please don't look at 12 envelopes and think, “Now I have 12 more things I need to put money into!”
No!
Make the binder work for your life and your budget.
Look at what's coming up first.
If you know you have several birthdays this summer, maybe family celebrations get a little more attention right now.
If Christmas is still months away, maybe you start with just $5 each payday.
If there's a holiday you don't personally celebrate, you don't need to save for it.
Your budget should reflect your life. Grab a few gift cards when you're done with your grocery shopping, great way to challenge yourself to stay below your budget.
Make It Part of Your Regular Budget Routine
You can make your Holiday Binder part of your regular budgeting or cash-stuffing routine.
When payday comes, look at what's coming up and decide what you can comfortably set aside.
Some paydays it may be $20.
Other paydays it might be $5.
And sometimes there may not be anything extra to put into it at all.
That's okay too.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is to build the habit of thinking ahead.
Give Yourself a Little Breathing Room
For me, that's really what this system is about.
It's not just about pretty envelopes or having another binder.
It's about giving yourself a little breathing room.
It's knowing that when a birthday, holiday, or family celebration comes around, you've already thought about it.
You've already prepared for it.
You've already put something aside.
And being a little more intentional with your finances now can help you so much in the long run.
So if you've ever wondered why I have a Holiday Binder or what you're supposed to do with one, this is why.
It's not just for Christmas.
It's not just for November and December.
It's a simple savings system that you can use all year long for the holidays, birthdays, and celebrations that are part of your life.
Start small. Save what you can. And give yourself permission to build it little by little.
